Hasina-Obama meeting at UNGA in Sept

A Jatiya Sangsad (parliamentary) panel sat in a meeting on Tuesday to discuss various matters including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s forthcoming visit to the USA to attend the United Nations general Assembly (UNGA) meeting. The parliamentary standing committee meeting, chaired by former foreign minister Dipu Moni, MP, and held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, also discussed the agenda of the prime minister’s meeting with US President Barack Obama to be held on the sidelines of the 70th UNGA in New York in September. Meeting sources informed the matter on Tuesday afternoon. It said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the US President Barack Obama will hold a meeting during the UNGA in New York in Sept as the two leaders did during the 69th UNGA meeting last year. According to the meeting sources, Sheikh Hasina and Barack Obama will hold a meeting on several bilateral issues. Other issues like terrorism and human trafficking will also be discussed in the upcoming meeting. Committee members foreign minister AH Mahmood Ali, Mohammad Faruk Khan, Golam Faruk Khandakar Prince and Kazi Nabil Ahmed, among others, were present at the meeting.

Prime Minister Hasina and President Obama held a meeting on September 26 in 2014 at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel, they appreciated each other’s speeches at the UN Climate Summit. World leaders will gather in New York to attend the 70th session of the UN General Assembly. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke at the 69th UNGA on global education on Sept 27, 2014. On 27 September she also addressed the US General Assembly. During her stay in New York last year, she met with the heads of state and government of various countries including India, Nepal, Chile and Qatar. President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a dinner in honour of the heads of state and government on Sept 26. Obama and Hasina exchanged greetings there. Prime Minister Hasina also exchanged greetings with the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other world leaders. After exchanging greetings, Hasina praised Obama for his speech at the climate summit. In response, Obama also praised Hasina for her speech on global environment and climate change, according to a news agency.
