Bangladesh Railway (BR) on Monday signed a contract with Indian rail construction company -- Larsen and Toubro Limited -- to construct a railway bridge over the river Rupsha.
General Manager of the BR Mojibor Rahman and Vice President of Larsen and Toubro Limited P Niranjana signed the contract on behalf of their respective sides, aimed at further improving the railway services in South-Western Bangladesh.
Railways Minister M Mazibul Haque, Secretary of the Ministry M Feroz Salauddin, BR Director General Amjad Hossain, Railway Advisor of Indian High Commission and concerned senior officials were present.
Addressing the ceremony, Mazibul Haque said the Tk10.76445 million project would be implemented under the Indian Line of Credit (LoC) to connect Mongla port with Khulna.
"We have taken up a 64.75-kilometer new railway line construction alongside the Rupsha bridge from Khulna to Mongla port to provide safe, reliable, cost-effective and time efficient services," he said.
He said the Indian company, under its credit line, would construct the bridge to establish a new rail-line between Khulna and Mongla to connect the country's second seaport with the railway network.
He urged the construction company to complete the Rupsha Bridge within the stipulated time, adding, "The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committed to improve the rail transport service through modernizing, expanding and maintaining rail system in a manner which supports government strategies for economic, social and environmental development."
The minister reiterated that the present government wants to build an efficient rail network as it is the most cost effective and easy mode of transportation both for people and commodities.
Some 12 projects are under implementation, while more projects are being included under the LoC scheme, Mazibul Haque said.
He said the government has also undertaken a project to construct an easy rail service in the capital and connect the city with the Padma Bridge.
