SC bans for 6 months screening of 'Rana Plaza'

The Supreme Court (SC) has banned for six months the exhibition and screening of the movie ‘Rana Plaza’. It is based on the rescue of garment worker Reshma Begum, 17 days after the multi-storey commercial complex collapsed in Savar upazila of Dhaka district on April 24, 2013, leaving over 1,100 killed and hundreds more injured. Justices Naima Haider and Mustafa Zaman Islam gave the order on Monday based on an August 20 plea by Bangladesh National Garment Workers League chief Sirajul Islam. The High Court division bench also stayed for the same timeframe, the censor board’s clearance of the movie. Awami League MP Barrister Fazle Noor Taposh argued for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman stood for the state. “As a result, the movie set to be released on September 4 cannot be screened in cinema halls or exhibited in any other medium,” petitioner’s lawyer Md Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury said. The 137-minute film produced by Shamim Akhter and directed by Nazrul Islam Khan got the Bangladesh Film Censor Board clearance on July 16, after a long delay due to objections over some scenes. According to Bangladesh Censorship of Films Rules, 1977 horrifying scenes, use of TV footage, names of law enforcement agencies are banned. The petitioners cited these clauses. The bench also issued a rule asking for reasons behind not scrapping the censor board approval. The information secretary, censor board chairman, MD and producer has been asked to respond within four weeks, according to bdnews24.com.
