Gold, silver prices up

Bangladeshi gold merchants have raised the prices of the yellow metal by around Tk1,500 per bhori (11.664 grams) after it became costlier in the international market. Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) have said they raised gold prices on August 6, 2015, but later reduced it on several occasions. “We’ve raised the prices in keeping with the international market,” BAJUS General Secretary Enamul Haq Khan has said. He said each gram of 22-carat gold will now cost Tk130 more while each gram of silver will cost Tk5 more. The new prices will be effective from August 23 (Sunday), he informed. From today, each bhori of 22-carat gold will cost Tk43,273 in domestic market while silver prices be costlier by Tk58 per bhori. An ounce of gold was being traded at $1,160 in the international market, according to Reuters. Gold prices had been hiked in Bangladesh on August 6 but later reduced on several occasions.

On July 23, Bangladesh Jewellers Samity had cut the gold prices by Tk1,540 per bhori. Silver prices had also been reduced by Tk58 per bhori in the domestic market as prices of the precious metals had dropped sharply across the world in July. Then a gram of 22-carat gold had been sold at Tk3,685 and a bhori of the yellow metal Tk42,981. A bhori of 21-carat gold then cost Tk40,882 and that of a bhori of 18-carat gold Tk34,233. On July 23, silver price had been reduced by Tk5 per gram. Each bhori of 21 or 22-carat silver had been sold at Tk991 in July, according to a news agency.
