1st anniversary of Pinak-6

Today (Aug 4) is the first anniversary of one of the most tragic accidents in Bangladesh’s inland waterways. ‘Pinak-6’ a launch packed with passengers, capsized in Padma River at Lauhajang upazila in Munshiganj district, claiming over 100 lives on this day in 2014. The overloaded launch with over 250 passengers on board left Kawrakandi of Madaripur and sank in Padma River, 800 yards off Mawaghat (jetty) of Munshiganj due to strong currents while it was heading towards the jetty. As per the government information, 49 bodies were recovered from the Padma and the Meghna rivers in different districts after the launch capsized in the mighty river. Some 53 people still remained missing in the incident. Meanwhile, punishment is yet to be meted out to those who are responsible for the incident although one year has elapsed since the tragedy, frustrating the families of the victims, according to a news agency.
