Drug trader killed in RAB 'shootout'

An alleged drug trader was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Faujdarhat area under Sitakundu upazila in Chittagong district early Monday. The deceased was identified as Zahidul Islam Alo, 35. Lt Col Mifta Uddin, commanding officer of RAB-7, said a RAB-7 patrol team challenged a vehicle in the area around 2:45am. Sensing presence of the elite forces, the people inside the vehicle opened fire at them, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate that triggered a 'gun battle' on Dhaka-Chittagong Bypass road. Zahidul received bullet injuries during the 'gun battle'. Later, the injured was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him dead. Police recovered the body from the Hospital around 8:30am, said Sudeep Das, officer-in-charge of Akbar Shah Police Station in the port city. RAB also recovered a foreign pistol, 1 magazine, three rounds of bullet and 20,000 pieces of contraband Yaba tablet from the spot, according to a news agency.
