Khaleda may attend graft case hearing Monda

The hearing in Zia Charitable Trust graft case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other accused will be held at the Special Judge’s Court-3, Dhaka, on Monday (August 10). Khaleda may attend the next hearing of the case, party sources said. On August 8, 2011, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing four people, including former prime minister Khaleda Zia, of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources. ACC deputy director Harunur Rashid, also an investigation officer of the case, pressed charges against the accused on January 16, 2012. Earlier, the ACC filed Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3, 2008 with Ramna Police Station accusing Khaleda, her elder son Tarique Rahman, now living in the UK after securing bail, and four others for misappropriating over Tk2.1 million (Tk2.10 crore) which came as grants from a foreign bank for orphans. On August 5, 2010, Harunur Rashid submitted a charge-sheet to the court in the case against six people, including BNP chief Khaleda Zia. The last proceedings in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case were held on Monday when defense counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain partially cross-examined plaintiff and first witness ACC deputy director Harun-or-Rashid. Khaleda Zia attended Monday’s hearing. She arrived at the makeshift court set up on the premises of Alia Madrasa at Bakshibazar in Old Dhaka around 10:28am on the day. Reliable sources at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office said Khaleda is likely to attend the next hearing in the graft case, according to a news agency.
