'Li-fi 100 times faster than wi-fi'

'Li-fi 100 times faster than wi-fi'

A new method of delivering data, which uses the visible spectrum rather than radio waves, has been tested in a working office. Li-fi can deliver internet access 100 times faster than traditional wi-fi, offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second), reports BBC. It requires a light source, such as a standard LED bulb, an internet connection and a photo detector.
It was tested this week by Estonian start-up Velmenni, in Tallinn.
Velmenni used a li-fi-enabled light bulb to transmit data at speeds of 1Gbps. Laboratory tests have shown theoretical speeds of up to 224Gbps.
It was tested in an office, to allow workers to access the internet and in an industrial space, where it provided a smart lighting solution.
Speaking to the International Business Times, chief executive Deepak Solanki said that the technology could reach consumers "within three to four years".
The term li-fi was first coined by Prof Harald Haas from Edinburgh University, who demonstrated the technology at a Ted (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference in 2011.
His talk, which has now been watched nearly two million times, showed an LED lamp streaming video.
Prof Haas described a future when billions of light bulbs could become wireless hotspots.
One of the big advantages of li-fi is the fact that, unlike wi-fi, it does not interfere with other radio signals, so could be utilised on aircraft and in other places where interference is an issue.
While the spectrum for radio waves is in short supply, the visible light spectrum is 10,000 times larger, meaning it is unlikely to run out any time soon.
But the technology also has its drawbacks - most notably the fact that it cannot be deployed outdoors in direct sunlight, because that would interfere with its signal.

Neither can the technology travel through walls so initial use is likely to be limited to places where it can be used to supplement wi-fi networks, such as in congested urban areas or places where wi-fi is not safe, such as hospitals, according to a news agency.

Arjun Tendulkar selected for Mumbai U-16

Arjun Tendulkar, son of Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar, has been selected for the Mumbai under-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy team after an all-round show in the Mumbai Cricket Association's Under-16 Payyade Trophy.

Arjun, who has played for the Under-14 Mumbai side in the West Zone leg matches of the BCCI tournament, smashed an impressive century (106 off 156 balls) for his side, Sunil Gavaskar XI.

On Day Two, the promising all-rounder shone with his left-arm medium pace and took four wickets for 73 runs against Rohit Sharma XI.

The youngster then went on to score 40 runs for his team in the second innings. The Payyade Trophy serves as a selection trial for Under-16 cricketers in Mumbai.

With no less than super dad available to give batting tips, Arjun has received bowling advice from Pakistan great Wasim Akram. Arjun has also been seen in the nets with the England national side, according to ndtv.com.

How To Make Food Coloring

How To Make Food Coloring

<
Food-Coloring-At-Home
This color will not only be safe, but you can make it using simple household ingredients and commonly available spices and vegetables. So, how do you make food coloring at home? Read on and find out.
1. Pink/Red Coloring: There are many options you can explore if pink or red is the colour you want to add to your food. Beets have a lot of natural color, but do not alter the taste of a particular dish. This makes them amazing natural red/pink food coloring agents.
To make the color, you can use canned beet juice or boil and juice the raw vegetable. Once you have boiled the beets, blend them in a food processor and strain the colour out using a sieve.
Other options to make red or pink color include cherries, pomegranate, raspberries or other red fruits. And in case you are thinking of including apple in the list, remember that apple isn’t a red fruit.
2. Orange Coloring: If you want your food to have that orange hue, consider adding carrots to your food. Although oranges might seem like a promising bet, they don’t add a lot of color to your food.
Cut the carrots lengthwise and blend them in a food processor. They will add a natural sweetness to your food.
3. Yellow Coloring: If yellow is the shade you are looking for, then the spice rack is where you need to look into.
Turmeric is one of the best spices that impart yellow color to your food. It does not have a very strong taste, but the color is quite rich and you should make sure that you don’t end up using too much of it.
Alternatively, you can also consider using saffron leaves for that lovely sunny yellow color.
4. Green Coloring: To get green color, you can consider adding spinach to your food. Add a little spinach, so that it does not change the flavor of your dish.
You can use a blended extract of spinach, or even add whole spinach leaves.
5. Blue/Purple Coloring:
These are perhaps the trickiest colors to prepare at home.
Although you can get a blue or purple coloring by blending blueberries and blackberries in a food processor, there are some other ingredients you need to add to derive that rich color. The twist in the tale is an ingredient you probably haven’t thought off – cabbage!
Yes, cabbage! Purple or red cabbage can be used to make purple or blue food coloring.
To make purple coloring, cut and boil cabbage until the water turns dark and the color is intensified. Remove the cabbage from this water. The result is a very rich and lush purple food dye.
To make blue coloring, stir in baking soda into the cabbage purple dye gradually over time. The baking soda reacts with the cabbage juice and the result is a pretty blue dye.
Benefits Of Food Coloring: Using food coloring has a few benefits. They are:
1. Safe: These food based colors are generally safe for use, and don’t contain chemicals that artificially amplified colors do.
2. Lighter Hue: These colors will be paler and more pastel-like than your regular food colors. Although this isn’t really a benefit, this ensures you never overdo the coloring. This way you can check on your progress and make sure that you get the right color combination.
3. Better Taste: Because these colors are made out of natural ingredients, they taste amazing. This makes them all the more desirable than those horrible artificially made coloring agents.
Mini pork pies with piccalilli

Mini pork pies with piccalilli

recipe-image-legacy-idIngredients
few dots of butter 600g shortcrust pastry, bought or homemade little flour, for dusting 85g dried white breadcrumbs 400g good Cumberland sausages (about 6) 200g smoked bacon lardons ¼ tsp each ground mace, ground pepper and dried sage 1 egg, beaten with a fork few pinches sesame seeds piccalilli, homemade or bought, to serve

Method
Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Line each hole of a 12-hole muffin tin with a thin strip of baking parchment across the middle that’s long enough so the ends stick out a centimetre or two – use a dab of butter to stick in place. Roll out two thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface and stamp out 12 x 10cm circles (you may need to re-roll trimmings). Press a circle into each hole to line. Sprinkle 1 tsp of breadcrumbs into the base of each pie. Tip the rest of the crumbs into a mixing bowl. Squeeze in the sausage meat, discarding the skins, along with the bacon, mace, pepper, sage and just a little salt. Get your hands in and mash and squish everything together until the breadcrumbs have just about disappeared. Divide mixture between the holes, packing in firmly and shaping to a dome in the middle. Roll out the remaining pastry and stamp out 12 x 7cm circles. Brush with a little egg and add a top to each pie, egg-side down to stick, carefully pressing pastry edges together to seal. Brush with more egg (don’t throw away leftovers) and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 30 mins until golden then carefully remove the pies from the tin, using the parchment ends to help you lift them out. Sit on a parchment lined baking tray, brush all round the sides with more egg and put back in the oven for 8 mins. Cool completely then eat with piccalilli, or your favourite pickle.

10 times quicker than the ones in current smartphones

10 times quicker than the ones in current smartphones

new-fast-battery_1024
Chinese technology company Huawei has announced that its latest prototype battery fills up with power 10 times quicker than the ones in current smartphones. Huawei has been showing off the technology at the 56th Battery Symposium in Japan this week, where a 3,000mAh pack reached a 48 percent charge in just 5 minutes. The lithium-ion batteries inside smartphones, tablets, and other similar gadgets have two main sections: an anode and a cathode. Electrons move from one section to the other while our devices are in use, and then back in the opposite direction as they are recharged.
Huawei says it has managed to bond special heteroatoms to the graphite molecules in the anode section of the battery to get this process moving faster, without decreasing energy density or battery life.
Faster charging might not seem as important as longer-lasting batteries, but if you combine it with modern-day wireless charging technologies, the need for batteries that go on and on becomes less urgent: if your phone can get back to a 100 percent charge every time you put it down at the office or at the coffee shop for 5 minutes, for example, you won't notice it getting dangerously low as often.
And it's not just about smartphones either, because everything from solar panels to electric cars need batteries that can take on a lot of energy quickly. If you're stopping your electric vehicle for a recharge, you don't want to be twiddling your thumbs for half an hour while it fills back up.
"Huawei is confident that this breakthrough in quick charging batteries will lead to a new revolution in electronic devices, especially with regard to mobile phones, electric vehicles, wearable devices, and mobile power supplies," says the company. "Soon, we will all be able to charge our batteries to full power in the time it takes to grab a coffee!"
While Huawei says the batteries "underwent many rounds of testing" and "have been certified by Huawei's terminal test department", it stopped short of saying exactly when these new packs will make their way into our gadgets.
We shouldn't have to wait too long, however - manufacturers such as Motorola and Samsung already have fast charging technologies built into their handsets, though not quite as speedy as the one shown off by Huawei's team of technicians.

Missing Russian jet pilot

Missing Russian jet pilot

A Russian pilot who went missing after his jet was shot down by Turkey while taking part in air strikes over Syria was rescued in a 12-hour operation involving special forces, Russia says.

The pilot is "alive and well" at a Russian air base in Syria, it says.

His co-pilot and a marine involved in a rescue were killed.

Turkey said the jet had strayed into its airspace but Russian President Vladimir Putin says the plane was flying over Syrian territory.

It is not clear what has happened to the body of the other pilot, who was killed by gunfire as he parachuted from his burning plane.

Tensions have escalated between Russia and Turkey over the incident, but the US, the EU and the UN have all appealed for calm.

President Putin has described the downing of the plane as a "stab in the back", and warned of serious consequences.

Turkey's President Recep Erdogan has defended the action, saying "everyone must respect the right of Turkey to protect its borders", but he stressed he did not want to escalate tensions further, according to media reports.

Bad loans at Europe's banks still double

Bad loans at Europe's banks still double

The scale of bad loans held by banks in the European Union is "a major concern" and more than double the level in the United States, despite an improvement in recent years, the EU's banking regulator said on Tuesday.

Non-performing loans (NPL) across Europe's major banks averaged 5.6 per cent at the end of June, down from 6.1 per cent at the start of the year. But that compares with an average of less than 3 per cent in the United States and even lower in Asia, according to the European Banking Authority (EBA).

The total of NPLs across Europe is about 1 trillion euros ($US1.1 trillion), equivalent to the size of Spain's annual gross domestic product (GDP) and 7.3 per cent of the EU's GDP.

Tuesday's figures were the first time detailed data on NPLs, defined as a loan that is more than 90 days overdue or where problems are spotted earlier, have been released in Europe. The EBA data covered 105 banks, spanning 20 EU countries and Norway.

Some 16.7 per cent of loans at banks in Italy were designated as NPLs, equivalent to 17.1 per cent of the country's GDP. Spain's banks had an average NPL ratio of 7.1 per cent, or 15.8 per cent of its GDP.

Banks in Cyprus fared even worse, with half of their loans classified as bad, followed by Slovenia (28.4 per cent), Ireland (21.5 per cent) and Hungary (18.9 per cent).

"Although gradually improving, quality of assets remains a major concern in the EU and an impediment to new lending and banks' profitability, particularly in countries already under economic stress," the EBA said.

Banks in Sweden had the lowest level of NPLs at an average of 1.1 per cent, followed by Norway (1.4 per cent), Finland (1.7 per cent), Britain (2.9 per cent), the Netherlands (2.9 per cent) and Germany (3.4 per cent).

I stand by everything I have said: Aamir Khan

Amid the controversy around his comment on 'growing intolerance' in India, Bollywood actor Aamir Khan said on Wednesday that he stands by what he said but at the same time he is proud to be an Indian.

He has been slapped with sedition charges in Kanpur sessions court for his statement and the hearing is set to take place on December 1.

The case has been filed under IPC section 124 A (sedition), 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds) 153 B (Imputations) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief).

Speaking at the eighth edition of the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, the bollywood actor had expressed alarm and despondency over the rise in cases displaying intolerance in the last six to eight months.

He had said that a sense of 'insecurity' and 'fear' had seeped deep within society, according to Times of India.

Clock boy' family seeks $15m

Clock boy' family seeks $15m

Fifteen million dollars and apologies were sought from the mayor and police chief.

That's what an attorney says the family of Ahmed Mohamed is demanding from city and school officials in Irving, Texas, or they say they'll file a civil suit.

In September, 14-year-old Ahmed made international headlines when he brought a handmade clock to school to show his teachers.

One of them thought it was a bomb and notified school authorities, who then called police. Ahmed was detained, questioned and hauled off in handcuffs. At the time, the school said it reacted with caution because the contraption that had wires could have been an explosive device.

It wasn't. It was just a clock.

But despite the surge of support for Ahmed, the attorney representing his family says the teen suffered severe psychological trauma and that his "reputation in the global community is permanently scarred."

In two letters sent Monday to attorneys representing the school district and the city, attorney Kelly Hollingsworth says that Ahmed's civil rights were violated by the way the case was handled.

Irving city officials told CNN they were reviewing the letter and had no comment.

School district spokeswoman Lesley Weaver told CNN that the district is aware of the letter and also had no comment.

Japan plans to raise minimum wage

Japan plans to raise minimum wage

Japan’s government plans to raise the minimum wage and introduce other steps to revitalise the economy, but the draft of stimulus measures seen by Reuters on Monday appeared to break no new ground on reforms that analysts say are needed to end decades of stagnation.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government will also offer some financial support to people living off their pensions to bolster consumer spending, a copy of the draft obtained by Reuters showed.

Citing unnamed sources, the Nikkei newspaper said on Monday that the government is planning to raise the minimum wage by 3.0 per cent. But the draft didn’t provide any specifics and analysts say the government will need to do more to foster durable growth.

Raising wages is an urgent task for policy makers as Tokyo is keen to ramp up consumer spending, which is seen as crucial to boosting domestic demand and pulling the economy out of 15 years of deflation.

However, some economists remained sceptical of the plans because they do not do enough to address Japan’s rigid labour market and low worker productivity.

"This sounds like short-term stimulus, but Japan needs structural reforms more than stimulus measures," said Marcel Thieliant, Japan economist at Capital Economics in Singapore.

"We might get a growth spurt for the next one to two years, but this will not lead to stronger growth in the long term."

Adele credits Sarah Palin

Adele credits Sarah Palin

Adele says Sarah Palin is directly responsible for her career as a singer.

Adele recounted recentlyhow the former Alaska governor and GOP candidate for vice president made an appearance on "Saturday Night Live" in October, 2008 during the height of the presidential campaign when Adele, then still relatively unknown, was the show’s musical guest.

That was the episode where Palin and Tina Fey, playing Sarah Palin, famously acknowledged one another during the show's cold opening.

"It was one of the most watched SNLs ever and then it was two weeks before the Grammy ballot, which is when people decide what songs they want to maybe nominate, so, like, literally the stars aligned for me," she said. "The album shot to number one on iTunes and I was nominated for a Grammy and then I won one! It was a joke! It was a joke. All thanks to Sarah Palin!"

Upon hearing of Adele’s story, Palin sent her a copy of her book “Sweet Freedom” with an inscription in which she said in part: “So… rumor has it you recently threw me some credit for your amazing success – very kind coming from someone like you.”

Adele sang two songs on Saturday's "SNL," and her hit single "Hello" was the subject of a new "SNL" Thanksgiving skit, according to BBC.

Salman Khan plans gift for fans on his 50th birthday

Salman Khan has had a great year so far with two back-to-back blockbusters – Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo – that released on Eid and Diwali respectively.
The hunk of a superstar will be turning 50 this December and will start shooting for Sultan next month.

Sultan seems to be Salman’s most ambitious project as the Bollywood titan is leaving no stone unturned to deliver his best performance in the film. He is working extremely hard on his physique to justify the role of a wrestler in the film. Salman is also taking personal interest in the scripting of the film and is spending about three hours each day with director Ali Abbas Zafar to give his inputs, reports suggest.

According to a DNA report, Salman intends to gift ‘Sultan’ to his fans, a film that is being built as his fiftieth birthday project. The film is slated to release on Eid 2016 and is reportedly set to clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ at the Box Office.

Dhaka Dynamites Win Against Comilla Victorians

Dhaka Dynamites Win Against Comilla Victorians

Dhaka Dynamites made hard work of beating Comilla Victorians by six wickets in the second match of the BPL's opening day. The match was played in the same pitch as the high-scoring Chittagong-Rangpur fixture, but Comilla's batsmen simply imploded in the face of mostly disciplined bowling.
Dhaka took their time finishing the 111-run chase, as they stretched it to the final over, winning with four balls to spare. Not until the eighth-wicket partnership between Mashrafe Mortaza and Krishmar Santokie did the Comilla innings look to be going anywhere. They lost their top and middle-order in the first 13.3 overs, slipping to 67 for 7. Openers Imrul Kayes and Liton Das were caught at mid-off and mid-on in the first two overs before Shuvagata Hom and Marlon Samuels were undone by good deliveries. The top five didn't get to double-figures.
Darren Stevens' run out in the eighth over made it 36 for 5 and though Ariful Haque and Mahmudul Hasan stemmed the constant flow of wickets, they could only add 23 runs before Ariful was stumped off Mosharraf Hossain, who also took Mahmudul's wicket.
The best bowler on show was the Pakistan legspinner Yasir Shah who, despite going wicketless, played around with the Comilla batsmen with his flight and change of pace. Hasan took three wickets while Mosharraf Hossain picked up two.
Santokie struck three fours in one Mustafizur over before Mashrafe smoked sixes off Farhad Reza and Mustafizur, the second one landing in the second tier over midwicket. He top-scored with 25 but a total of 110 for 8 was never going to be enough to challenge a batting line-up like Dhaka's.
Shamsur Rahman made 19 off 17 balls before giving mid-off a catch off Mashrafe but Nasir Jamshed and Dhaka captain Kumar Sangakkara kept the short chase in control. Sangakkara swung but missed to give Abu Hider his first wicket.
They added 55 runs for the second wicket, before Jamshed fell for a run-a-ball 44 to Sunil Narine.

Apples Iovine for saying women cant find music

Apples Iovine for saying women cant find music

Apple’s Jimmy Iovine apologised for a comment he made during a morning television interview in which he suggested that “some women” have difficulty finding music.

“We created Apple Music to make finding the right music easier for everyone — men and women, young and old,” Iovine said in a statement. “Our new ad focuses on women, which is why I answered the way I did, but of course the same applies equally for men. I could have chosen my words better, and I apologise.”

The remarks came during an interview on “CBS This Morning,” in which the longtime music executive talked about a new Apple Music commercial featuring Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson and Mary J. Blige discussing the music service while making dinner.

“I always knew that women, some women, at times find it very difficult to find music,” said Iovine. “And this helps make it easier with playlists, curated by real people, not by algorithms alone.”

UK govt sets up £1bn fund to fight malaria

UK govt sets up £1bn fund to fight malaria

The UK government is to create a new £1bn fund aimed at eradicating malaria and other infectious diseases.

The Ross Fund will be run in partnership with US philanthropists, Bill and Melinda Gates.

It is named after Sir Ronald Ross who became Britain's first Nobel Prize winner in 1902 for his discovery that malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes.

The number of people dying from malaria is falling but a child still dies from the disease every minute in Africa.

Ministers say the partnership with the Microsoft founder and his wife Melinda marks a "fundamental restructuring" of the UK's aid budget.

The £1bn will come from the UK's overseas aid budget over the next five years.

UK Chancellor George Osborne said one billion people were infected with malaria and 500,000 children die from the disease each year.

He said the government's commitment to overseas aid helps to "promote our national security and interests around the world".

Working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will help us in "our joint ambition to see an end to this global disease in our lifetimes", he added.

Mr Gates, co-chairman of the foundation, said eradicating malaria and other poverty-related infectious diseases would be "one of humanity's greatest achievements," according to media reports. -amh

Deepika Says 'Priyanka was my first friend in Bollywood'

Priyanka Chopra-Deepika Padukone bonding dates back to the time when Deepika Padukone entered the industry.

“Priyanka was the first film person I met when I came here,” revealed Deepika and added, “She was a huge star. I had just joined. She was the first friend I made. We were so comfortable shooting for Pinga song that it troubled a few people because it went against what a lot of people thought it would be. People expected it there would be a lot of tension regarding what she wearing and what I am wearing. It was completely different. Sanjay Leela Bhansali would jokingly say why can’t you fight.”

Like soul sisters, Priyanka and Deepika would be there for each other always on sets.

Shared Deepika, “It was great fun. While shooting we watched each other’s back. If there was a step which I would find difficult, she would encourage me and if she would something difficult I would encourage her. There were days when we both wanted to give up and there were days when we both came in with the same kind of energy. It’s been a lot of fun and I couldn’t have asked for a better co-star.”

Priyanka plays the role of Kashibai and Deepika plays Mastani in Bajirao Mastani, according to a media reports. -amh

Bright light therapy can ease depression

Bright light therapy can ease depression

For people with depression, using "bright light therapy" either alone or combined with an antidepressant might help treat their condition, a new study suggests.

In the eight-week study of 122 people with major depression, the researchers found that people who were treated with either a bright light box or a combination of light box therapy with an antidepressant drug experienced more improvement in their symptoms than people treated with a placebo.

In comparison, those treated with an antidepressant drug (without light therapy) did not show improvements over those taking only a placebo pill.

"It is not unusual that an antidepressant — or any treatment [for depression] actually — is not statistically better than placebo," said study author Dr. Raymond W. Lam, of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

It is commonly known that people with depression who participate in clinical trials get better even with only a placebo, he said. It's possible that the contact with the treatment team and regular appointments that come with being part of a trial help people with the condition, he said.

"So the fact that, in our study, the light treatments did better than placebo even when the Prozac did not really indicates than the effect was large," Lam said, according to media reports. -amh

Samsung's first consumer VR headset

Samsung's first consumer VR headset

There's a new option for people who need some me time after Thanksgiving dinner this year -- virtual reality.Samsung's first consumer VR headset, the Gear VR, officially went on sale Friday for $100. Online pre-orders at Best Buy, Amazon and Samsung began November 10.

Samsung launched its first commercially available VR headset, the "Innovator Edition," in 2014 for $200.

"[This year] we're ready to start calling Samsung Gear VR a consumer product," Samsung VP Nick Dicarlo told a group of reporters in New York this week.Virtual reality is the hot new thing in media. The technology lets people believe they're somewhere else.

Users put on a pair of oversized goggles to watch 3D videos. At the same time, matching audio plays through headphones based on the user's interactions and spatial relationships with different objects in view. The new Gear VR costs and weighs less than Samsung's earlier headset, and it's easier and more comfortable to use.

The gadget operates with Samsung's newest phones: the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.
Users connect the Gear VR to their phone, put on headphones, then watch and interact with 3D videos and games by moving their heads.

Virtual reality has been getting a lot of attention. Media companies including CNN, The New York Times and Vice are experimenting with news broadcasts in VR. Linden Lab, the company behind Second Life, is building a virtual universe. A Sony PlayStation VR is expected to go on sale in 2016.
Facebook, which owns Oculus, a virtual reality pioneer, expects to sell the Oculus Rift early next year for about $1,500 for a complete setup tethered to a computer.

A virtual reality app store has more than 100 free and paid apps, and 40 more will be added in the next few weeks.

Most of the apps play 3D entertainment, such as Land's End, a puzzle and maze game from the same team behind the award-winning mobile game Monument Valley.

But some apps, including Netflix and live-stream platform Twitch, create a fake 3D theater that plays regular videos, according to media reports. -amh

Pakistan not considering MFN status to India

Pakistan not considering MFN status to India

Despite being a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Pakistan yet to provide Most Favoured Nation (MFN) to India, which is also a member of the organisation.

MFN is a basic principle of WTO which asks its members not to discriminate one member with others.

Pakistan Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan on Friday categorically informed the country’s National Assembly that no proposal was under consideration to give the MFN status to India, reports DAWN.

He also said that the existence of a negative list was a clear indication that the MFN status had not been given to India. He said that since the Modi government took over last year, no bilateral trade talks had taken place. About non-tariff barriers, he said that these were dealt with on a case-to-case basis with India.

The positive list had been transformed into the negative list few years ago when there was a discussion to provide MFN status to India.

Mr Dastgir, however, said China and Taiwan were in conflict, but their annual bilateral trade was $200 billion. China and India also have hostile relations, but their trade volume stands at $75bn per annum. He also said that being a member of the WTO, Pakis¬tan could not discriminate between its members in trade.

Goldman Sachs bets on Russian currency

Goldman Sachs bets on Russian currency

Goldman Sachs, the US investment bank, predicts that the Russian currency Ruble will be on the list of good performing currencies next year along with the US dollar and the Mexican peso.

The Russian Times (RT) report also mentioned that Glodman Sachs suggest buying Russian and Mexican currencies over South Africa’s Rand and Chile’s Peso.

This week, the Ruble has grown three per cent, but seems not strong enough to continue the trend in 2015.

Ruble assets have found useful support over the last week on a perceived rapprochement between Russia and the West. “This relationship may, however, will be tested over the coming days and weeks as fundamentals continue to be weak, oil prices remain under pressure and a December Fed liftoff seems increasingly likely,” told Ivan Tchakarov, economist at Citigroup.

Suu Kyi Says Myanmar to continue friendly policy toward China

Myanmar will continue to adopt a friendly foreign policy with all countries including China and place more emphasis on relations with its neighbors, Chairperson of the National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi said on Tuesday.

Since independence, Myanmar has always been adopting a friendly foreign policy with all countries, which is the correct policy for the country, she told Xinhua, adding that the NLD could successfully implement such a policy.

Asked about the issue of attracting foreign investment, Suu Kyi welcomd investment from all countries, including China, in Myanmar.

She stressed that it was imperative to gain the trust of Myanmar people to make investment in the country.

She also praised China's "Belt and Road" initiative, hoping the plan could benefit all sides.

The initiative of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, is aimed at reviving the ancient trade routes that span Asia, Africa and Europe.

China stocks mixed

China stocks mixed

China stocks ended Thursday morning mixed as small caps rebounded but property shares dropped on profit-taking after the previous session's surge, with investors cautious ahead of a batch of initial public offerings. Hong Kong shares climbed over 1 per cent, encouraged by a jump in Wall Street. The CSI300 index rose 0.2 per cent, to 3,721.21 points at the end of the morning session, while the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.1 per cent, to 3,566.83. The market was hald back by a sharp correction in property stocks. The CSI300 Real Estate index fell 1.7 per cent, wiping much of Wednesday's 3.5 per cent jump.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index added 1.2 per cent, to 22,442.54 point, while the Hong Kong China Enterprises Index gained 1.2 per cent, to 10,175.30. Geely Automobile Holdings jumped 5.5 per cent, after the Chinese automaker said it plans to concentrate entirely on developing green energy vehicles, eschewing traditional combustion engines and completely overhauling its product portfolio, according to Reuters.

1,000 bison to be killed this winter

1,000 bison to be killed this winter

Yellowstone National Park proposes to kill roughly 1,000 wild bison this winter — mostly calves and females — as officials seek to reduce the animals' annual migration into Montana.

Park officials are scheduled to meet Thursday with representatives of American Indian tribes, the state and other federal agencies to decide on the plan.

It marks the continuation of a controversial agreement reached in 2000 between Montana and the federal government that was meant to prevent the spread of the disease brucellosis from bison to livestock.

Almost 5,000 bison roamed the park this summer. A harsh winter could drive thousands into areas of southwestern Montana.

Hunters, including from tribes with treaty rights in the Yellowstone area, are anticipated to kill more than 300 of the animals this winter. Others would be captured and slaughtered or used for research.

"Through the legal agreement the National Park Service has to do this," said Yellowstone spokeswoman Sandy Snell-Dobert. "If there was more tolerance north of the park in Montana for wildlife, particularly bison as well as other wildlife, to travel outside the park boundaries, it wouldn't be an issue."

Tamasha is now the most awaited film

Tamasha is now the most awaited film

Tamasha is now the most awaited film of the season in Indian film industry . The Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer carries a distinct appeal and given the hype around the two young stars, one is rest assured that youth would be pretty much enticed to give it a dekko. In fact producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Imtiaz Ali have come up with a distinct marketing and promotional campaign which is not on your face but yet conveys a clear understanding on what the film is all about, hence making it targeted and high impact.
While Imtiaz continues to be equated with quality cinema, Sajid is on a dream run, what with last year bringing on four straight successes (Kick, 2 States, Heropanti, Highway) and this year's Phantom too starting on a very positive note with a classy treatment to it. Given the fact that the producer goes all out to lend his films an upscale look and feel with no expense spared, one expects yet another big screen entertainer from him.

All of that makes Tamasha the only other Hindi film after Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which promises to bring in audience in theaters next week.

Apple not planning to merge MacBook, iPad

Apple not planning to merge MacBook, iPad

Apple is not planning to merge the MacBook and iPad. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, made that clear in an interview.
“We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad,” he said.
Cook admitted that the difference between MacBooks and iPads is getting smaller with each iteration, but asserted that Apple still sees the two product lines as separate.
"we want to make the best tablet in the world and the best Mac in the world. And putting those two together would not achieve either. You’d begin to compromise in different ways,” he said.
Clarifying his recent comments about the death of PC, Cook said he actually meant Windows PCs, not Macs.
Cook did not have a direct comment on the rumors that Apple is building a car, merely saying there would be "significant changes in the automobile industry over the next several years with electrification and autonomous driving," according to media reports. -amh

Tamil Nadu floods kill dozens

Tamil Nadu floods kill dozens

India has deployed the army and air force to rescue flood-hit residents in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, where at least 71 people have died in around a week of torrential rains.

Media reports said military helicopters were being used to drop food and drinking water to the worst-hit areas, while schools and businesses in state capital Chennai had been forced to close.

Twelve children and 10 adults were airlifted to safety on Monday, the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency quoted an official as saying.

PTI said at least 71 people had died since the rains started last week, with the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka also affected.

Television footage showed families in Chennai using canoes to get through waist-deep waters.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram said the government was "working day and night" to bring relief to victims of the floods, caused by a cyclonic depression formed in the Bay of Bengal.
