Much progress in Tavella murder probe: Police

Police have claimed 'considerable progress' in the investigation into the murder of Italian citizen Cesare Tavella. Tavella, 50, a charity worker, had been shot dead at Gulshan in Dhaka on September 28. Detective Branch (DB) of police's Inspector Jehad Hossain, who is investigating the case, did not, however, elaborate. But it was apparent from his remarks that the assailants were yet to be identified and the motive remained unclear.

“We are checking every possible angle. The investigation has progressed much,” Hossain said. “It will not be right to say more for the sake of the investigation before the criminals are identified,” he said. “Our first target is to identify those who directly took part in the murder,” he added.

He said once they were pinned down, “it will become clear who and carried out the murder and why”.

Four days after Tavella’s murder on Sept 28, Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi was gunned down in a similar manner in Kawnia upazila in Rangpur district.

A businessman and a local BNP leader have been arrested in connection with Hoshi’s killing. Islamic State (IS) has reportedly claimed responsibility for both murders.

Detective Hossain said police were determined to solve the Tavella murder mystery and hoped identify the killers soon.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Muntasirul Islam said several units of the law enforcing agencies were working in groups to identify the murderers and find the motive, according to a news agency.
