Five people, including four members of a family, received burn injuries in an explosion resulting from leak of a gas burner in Ashkona in Dhaka city on Sunday morning. The injured were identified as Rehana Akhter, 40, wife of Saudi Arabia expatriate Abul Kashem, her daughter Afsana Akhter, 20, two sons – Rezanul Ahmed Shuvo, 18, and Tanvir Ahmed Niloy, 12, and housemaid Sakina, 12. Talking to reporters at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), burn injured Shuvo said they have been living at House no 65 of East Ashkona under Dakkhin Khan police station. The incident took place when their domestic help Sakina was trying to light the gas burner at around 7:30am, Shuvo said, adding that they were injured as all of a sudden an explosion occurred due to leak in the stove. Contacted, Mizanur Rahman, duty officer of Fire Service control room, said the fire erupted in the kitchen of the house due to a gas leakage. A unit of Tongi Fire Station went to the spot and doused the fire, he added. Sources at the DMCH burn unit stated condition of Rehana, Niloy and Sakina to be critical, according to a news agency.
