Digital licence plates mandatory from 2016

No vehicles will be able to ply without plates made of retro-reflective material with RFID (radio-frequency identification) tags from the beginning of next year. Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader said on Wednesday that all vehicles will have to collect such licence plates issued by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) by December 31. “A circular will be issued today,” he told reporters. The hi-tech licence plates, aiming to curb road rages and monitor movement of vehicles, were launched by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over three years ago.

RFID-tagged retro-reflective licence plates will help identify a vehicle and also will help to curb use of fake plates on vehicles. The prime minister launched the RFID-tagged licence plates at a function in the city in 2012, according to a news agency.
