World Food Day being observed

The World Food Day-2015 is being observed in Bangladesh through various programmes on Friday. The day is also being observed today elsewhere in the globe. This year’s slogan for the Day in Bangladesh is ‘Reduce rural poverty and social security through agriculture.’

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages wished success for the Day and its programmes.

In his message, the President called upon all to fulfill the dream of Bangabandhu through agriculture and also to use the sector to ensure food security at the family level.

He advised farmers to utilise modern technology to attain the objective.

In her message, the prime minister asked all to ensure social security through integrated agriculture and modern market management.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) felt that it was important that farmers have access to the latest technologies.

The organisation was also concerned at the fast depletion of arable land which was reducing at a rate of 10 to 35 hectares, every year.

It may be recalled that in 1979 following a proposal by Dr Paul Romani, a Hungarian scientist, at the 20th General Assembly of FAO, the Day was adopted as "World Food Day," according to a news agency.
