Commonwealth Secy Gen calls on PM Hasina

Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma on Tuesday sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's active participation at the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Malta later this year, as he called on her at the premier's office.

"He (Sharma) expressed hope that a high level Bangladesh delegation under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would attend the upcoming CHOGM and its parallel forums," a foreign office statement told BSS.

During the call on Sharma appreciated "Bangladesh's abiding commitment, fundamental values and principles of Commonwealth" while briefing her on the preparations and priorities of the forthcoming summit.

"He sought her (PM's) views and guidance in making the Commonwealth summit a success and bring the organisation into greater relevance," the statement read.

The premier, it said, told the Commonwealth chief that Bangladesh would like to see the CHOGM 2015 outcome "to voice for and enhance the interests of LDCs and Small Island and developing states (SIDS) in international fora in priority areas such as trade, market access, investment, poverty eradication, sustainable development, women's empowerment, climate change, blue economy and others."

Sharma leads a three-member delegation as he is on a three-day official visit to Bangladesh.
