Miraz made youth ambassador of Walton

All-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who is the incumbent captain of Bangladesh U-19 cricket team, has been appointed as youth ambassador of Walton Group, country’s leading electronics, electrical and home appliances manufacturing company. Walton appointed Miraz as youth ambassador for the next two years. In this regard, an agreement between young cricketer Miraz and the country’s electronics’ giant Walton was signed at the conference room of media office of Walton Group at Motijheel Monday. On behalf of Walton Group, Operative director Uday Hakim has inked the deal with Miraz, according to a news agency.

No re-registration for SIMs

Those who have registered their mobile phone SIM cards properly during purchase will not be required to go through the process again, says the telecom regulator. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Sunil Kanti Bose at a press briefing on Monday said, “Not all of the 130 million SIMs will have to be registered again.” The re-registration process has been going on for the past three months. According to BTRC data, there were about 128.7 million mobile-phone subscribers in Bangladesh until July this year. Bose said he attended a meeting convened on this issue at the Posts and Telecommunication Division on Sunday. “The meeting decided that the unregistered SIMs will have to be registered. But I don’t think every single one of the 130 million SIMs are fake,” he said. The BTRC recently started a drive to stop the sale of unregistered SIMs following allegations that some of these untraceable SIM cards were being used for criminal operations. Minister of State for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim has also personally taken initiatives to prevent use of unregistered SIMs. She took part in some of the BTRC drives conducted as part of the crackdown to stop the sale of unregistered SIMs, according to a news agency.

Fake Rab man held in Sirajganj

Police arrested a fake member of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) from Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj district on Monday. The arrestee was identified as Dipak Chandra, son of late Anil Chandra, a resident of Amdanga village in Ullapara upazila. Sub-inspector of Ullapara Police Station Jell Haque said Anil had long been cheating people by identifying himself as a member of Rab. On Monday morning, teachers of Ullapara Government Akbar Ali College confined him and handed over him to police as he used to threat the college officials by using his identity, he added. A case was filed in this connection, according to a news agency.

Man strangles wife, minor daughter to death

A young housewife and her minor daughter were strangulated to death allegedly by her husband over a dowry-related feud in Kaliganj upazila in Satkhira district on Tuesday. The deceased were identified as Sabina Khatun, 24, wife of Abdur Rauf, a resident of Ghona Kashempur village of the Upazila, and her two-and-half years old daughter Ayesha Siddika. Locals said Abdur Rauf had married Sabina, daughter of Anwar Hossain, a resident of Tarali village, three-and-half years back. Since after their marriage, Rauf had often tortured Sabina for dowry. Rauf had also demanded a motorcycle from Sabina’s family. The victim’s mother, Jahanara Begum, said Rauf had been pressing Sabina to bring the motorcycle as dowry from her parents as early as possible, a demand that she refused. Angered by refusal, Rauf mercilessly beat up Sabina. Sabina along with Ayesha moved to her father’s house at Tarali village. On Monday night, Rauf came to his father-in-law’s house. Later, Rauf strangled Sabina and Ayesha at about 3:00am and fled the scene, leaving them dead on the spot. Being informed, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Police also arrested Rauf on Tuesday morning, according to a news agency.

Cattle trader dies after having meal at a restaurant in Rajshahi

A cattle trader, who fell unconscious after having a meal along with 35 people at a restaurant at Bypass cattle market in Rajshahi city on Sunday, died in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on early Monday. The deceased was identified as Jaj Miah, son of Fazlur Rahman, hailing from Shibpur village of Shibpur upazila in Narshingdi district. Jaj Miah died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of RMCH around 5am, said ICU head Golam Mostafa. On information, police recovered the body. Earlier, at least 35 people, including some cattle traders, fell unconscious after having a meal at a restaurant at Bypass cattle market in the city on Sunday. Amzad Hossain, a victim, said around 40 cattle traders and truck drivers went to Bypass cattle market in the city on Sunday for purchasing cattle ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. Later, they entered a restaurant named ‘Jafor’s Hotel’ inside the cattle market around 10 am having a meal of rice and beef curry. After having their meals, the cattle traders fell unconscious one after another around 10:45 am. Among them, seven were rushed to RMCH. Police arrested four people, including the son of restaurant owner Foysal Hossain, in this connection, according to UNB.
