1st anniversary of Pinak-6

Today (Aug 4) is the first anniversary of one of the most tragic accidents in Bangladesh’s inland waterways. ‘Pinak-6’ a launch packed with passengers, capsized in Padma River at Lauhajang upazila in Munshiganj district, claiming over 100 lives on this day in 2014. The overloaded launch with over 250 passengers on board left Kawrakandi of Madaripur and sank in Padma River, 800 yards off Mawaghat (jetty) of Munshiganj due to strong currents while it was heading towards the jetty. As per the government information, 49 bodies were recovered from the Padma and the Meghna rivers in different districts after the launch capsized in the mighty river. Some 53 people still remained missing in the incident. Meanwhile, punishment is yet to be meted out to those who are responsible for the incident although one year has elapsed since the tragedy, frustrating the families of the victims, according to a news agency.

Porno CDs: Three held

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have personnel arrested three men with 900 pirated and 640 porno Compact Discs (CD) from two shops in a market in Chittagong city. The detainees were identified as Sazzad Ahmed, 25, Noyon Das, 23, and Mohammad Mostafa, 24. A team of RAB-7 conducted the drive at Shah Amanat City Corporation Market under the port city’s Kotwali Police Station and arrested them with CDs from two shops, on Sunday night, said Sohel Mahmud, Assistant Director of RAB-7. A case was filed, according to a news agency.

Umrah visas issuance to resume after Hajj

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has assured Bangladesh of resuming issuace of Umrah visas to Bangladeshi pilgrims after the next Hajj. Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Nizar Bin Obaid Madani gave the assurance about resuming issuance of Umrah visas to the Bangladeshi people during a meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart Shahriar Alam in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh on Monday. During the meeting the Saudi state minister also dropped a broad hint at importing more manpower from Bangladesh for various sectors of the oil rich Middle-Eastern country. When contacted, counsellor (political) of Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh Mosharaf Hossain said the Saudi minister expressed willingness of his country to import human resources from Bangladesh at the meeting. He further said the two leaders also talked about several other issues related to the interest of the two brotherly countries. Shahriar Alam also thanked the Saudi government for announcing general amnesty for foreigners in 2014. The state minister for foreign affairs of Bangladesh also requested the Saudi government to import drugs, readymade garments (RMG), jute and jute products, hides, plastic and ceramic products from Bangladesh. Later, they participated in a lunch.

Smart card production begins in Aug

The production of high quality smart national identity (NID) card will begin this (August) month. The Election Commission (EC) said people of Dhaka city and its adjoining area would get smart cards first. The EC said it would distribute the multipurpose smart cards to over 95 million citizens between September 2015 and June 2016. Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz said “We will distribute the smart cards soon. Another meeting of the commission will decide the distribution schedule.” He said 10 machines for smart card personalisation were already at hand. One of them would be installed at the project office at Agargaon and the rest would temporarily be put at prime minister’s relief office, he said. “We are very hopeful that we can go for production at the end of this month.” He said the distribution would immediately follow the production. Now the voters have laminated NID cards, according to a news agency.

2nd Test ends in draw: BD V SA

The second Test between Bangladesh and South Africa ended in a draw as the match has been called off early on the fifth day due to wet outfield, after three successive washed-out days by rain, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday, reports UNB.

The two-match Test series finished fruitless 0-0 as the first match also ended in a draw in Chittagong, but Bangladesh gained six points for their plucky performance in both the matches. They raised their Test rating points tally to 47 from 41.

Bangladesh were at stumps 246 for 8 in 88.1 overs with Nasir Hossain unbeaten on 13 at the wicket in the first innings of the second Test on day one.

South African bowler Dale Willem Steyn enjoyed most of his success in the second Test as he joined a selected group of bowlers to claim 400 wickets. He grabbed the wicket of Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal on day one and became the second South African in the 400-wicket-club after Shaun Pollock who took 421 wickets in his career, and the 13th overall.
