Lionel Messi scored less than a minute after coming on as a substitute and added another goal in Argentina’s 7-0 victory over Bolivia on Friday night in Houston. The Barcelona star entered in the 65th minute and scored on a header from 8 yards. He scored again 9 minutes later, rounding the goalkeeper in front of the crowd of 22,126. Messi has nine multigoal games for Argentina, including three hat tricks. The game was Argentina’s first since losing to Chile in July in the Copa America final. Ezequiel Lavezzi opened the scoring in the fifth minute, and Sergio Aguero connected in the 33rd with a delicate chip from a tough angle. Lavezzi added another 4 minutes before halftime. The pair combined again for the fourth in the 59th minute, Aguero converting the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s low cross from close range. Substitute Angel Correa completed the rout in the friendly at BBVA Compass Stadium with 7 minutes remaining. The match was Julio Cesar Baldivieso’s first in charge of Bolivia, which dismissed Mauricio Soria despite exceeding expectations by reaching the quarterfinals of the Copa America. Argentina will face Mexico in an exhibition match at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Tuesday night before kicking off World Cup 2018 qualifying against Ecuador in Buenos Aires on October 8, according to AP.

Govt criticised for hiking gas, power prices

Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad has criticised the government for raising the prices of gas and electricity. “There’s no logic behind this price hike… many had suggested them [govt] not to raise gas and power prices but they did not pay heed to anyone. This government does not see people’s tears,” Ershad, also a special envoy to the prime minister, said, while addressing a conference of Comilla Dakkhin District JP in Comilla city. He went on saying, “Now we’ve retuned to the ‘Dark age’ where teachers are being assaulted by students. Now there’s no good governance in Bangladesh, and the law and order have deteriorated. Even Hindu community’s property is grabbed.”

The JP chief said people now want a change and want Jatiya Party to be in power excluding the two main parties – Awami League and BNP. He also alleged that the country’s people have lost their right to freedom of speech. A suffocating environment is prevailing in the country, added the former president, according to a news agency.

A school student has been crushed under a truck in Dhaka city. Police and hospital sources identified the deceased as Rabiul Islam, 11, Class-V student of Batchar Government Primary School in Kadamtoli area. Kadamtali Police Station’s sub-inspector M Saleh Ahmed said the accident occurred near Match Factory area on Sunday. The doctor declared him dead when he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he added, according to a news agency.

Bangladesh Army personnel on Monday morning busted a den of armed miscreants in Dighinala Upazila in Khagrachhari district and arrested a suspected miscreant. The army team also recovered one Sub-Machine Gun (SMG), two Self-Loading Rifles (SLR), three SLR magazines and 139 round of bullets from the criminals’ den. Khagrachhari Army region G2I Major Nasir said, being tipped off, a team of Bangladesh Army conducted a drive in Kamukkaya Chhara area in Dighinala at around 6:00am on Monday. The army men detained a ‘criminal’ from the den and recovered one SMG, two SLRs, three SLR magazines and 139 round of bullets. Major Nasir said, the drive was on-going till 9:15am, according to a news agency.

Three players of Bangladesh national cricket team – Tamim Iqbal, Taskin Ahmed and Anamul Haque – attended the Bangladesh Internet Week in the city on Sunday evening. The Bangladesh Internet Week is being held in Dhaka’s Banani playground. The event is being organised with the aim to encouraging young people in using internet. When Tamim, Taskin and Anamul entered the venue, the visitors with broad smiles in the faces clapped to welcom the star players. The organiser of the event gave the Tigers warm reception. Taskin said that people of rural areas are getting opportunity to enjoy cricket matches through internet. They are also learning cricket seeing online video clips of the world famous players. The Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), Grameenphone and the ICT department have arranged the internet week which began on Saturday, according to a news agency.
